I was in a $4, 6 player Ring game going in with the minimum of $1.20 due my shrinking stack (under $10). After 90 hands I up around $2.33 and going to quit play at 100 hands. On hand 98 I had pocket K's. I raise the limp to 5 BB and he calls. I have note on him, based on 20 or so hands this session that says he likes to play a lot of hands and gets aggressive when he has the nuts. So far so good.
The flop is Td Jc Qc. My K's are still best but there is a straight or straight draw out there. I bet 1/2 the pot and this player RR all-in. Crap I think. He does have a wide range and based on his limp I doubt he has AK and I wonder if he might have a straight from the low end. I tend to forget that in his past play that I've seen, when he has the nuts, or apparent nuts, he bets aggressively. I decide it's unlikely he has the straight and I call. BIG MISTAKE. Indeed he does have a straight, holding Kh 9s. I'm feeling very bad as I've gone from $2.33 up to minus $1.80. Grrrrrr.
Unfortunately I have no-one but myself to blame for that. I knew when he hits he suddenly bets big, I'd not seen him bluff, and basically he overbets instead of slow or medium playing his good hand. I should have folded my pocket K's at his all-in, PERIOD!
Over and out.

Live Poker tournament 9/14
I had my best night ever, finishing 2nd from between 25 and 35 players. It felt good to cash in a money event and makes me feel a bit more confident of my poker play. I'm far from a good player and have a long way to go, but it was nice to see some reward for all the work I've put in over the past few years.
It was a mixture of luck and play that got me there. Fairly early in the session I was all-in with 400 chips left if I lose. Should have written this up sooner as I'm not sure of what my cards were, but it may have been my 99 vs QQ. I sucked out on the River with a straight and had a few chips under my belt.
One good play I feel I made was when I had pocket AA's and bet pre-flop 2 or 3 BB hoping to pick up a couple of other players, which I did. The flop was xQQ. I still had top pair but would rather not have seen those two Q's there. I bet about 1/2 the pot and was called by one of the players. I wasn't sure what that meant but obviously pocket Q's and my bet didn't scare him. On the Turn I checked (if I recall correctly that I was 1st to act), and the other player went all-in. Darn!! I liked my pocket A's and would have loved to continue BUT an all-in bet suggested he had something like a set, or I thought, more likely Qx giving him trip Q's. After thinking about it a bit I reluctantly folded.
I was 1st, very happy, I'd made the final table (1st time, as I've busted out after the 2nd or 3rd break previous times). There were seven of us and the top 5 would make the money. One player went out quickly in 7th, and shortly thereafter, we were on the bubble, with one player very short stacked. He won one all-in but busted out a few hands later, and now I was in the money. :-)
Head's up I didn't play well. I was a bit overwhelmed that I was in that spot and tended to play too passively against the other player who was more aggressive. Anyway it was good night and I went back home feeling very happy!

Poker Pub 9/10/11 6 PM
It was monsoon stormy when I headed out to Famous Sam's for the 6 PM tournament. Shortly after I got there torrential rains started falling, lightning, thunder .... glad I was inside. Whatever kind of dish they have for their TV's went out shortly thereafter.
I had a pretty good night making the final table again and this time with enough chips to make a bit of a game of it. I busted out around 7th missing an open-ended straight draw. Fortunately the storm had died down by then and I had an uneventful trip back home.

Sometimes you get lucky
I was in another $2 six player SNG Dbl-Up. One of the players that I a couple of hundred hands for, but few notes, plays very tight. In this session every time he entered a hand (except for possible BB limps) he bet or raised all-in. I was in MP w/pocket 9's. I decided to limp in, the SB limped, and the BB RR A-I. Phooey I thought. Pocket 9's aren't that great with a A-I RR Pre-F from a very tight player and usually I'd fold in this situation, but this time I decided I wanted to see what he went A-I with. This was the 3rd or 4th time he'd gone A-I this session and everyone folded each time, so I had no clues beyond he plays tight, what he might consider going A-I with, so I decided to call and eat my $2 just to get that information.
He turned over pocket Q's making me a 4-1 underdog. Oh well I thought. The flop came Ah 6s 2d. Turn 9d. Ah I have hope, I only have to dodge a Q on the River. River 2h. WOW, I was still alive and now in nice shape in this session. LUCKY! :-)
Later I thought it would have been better to 1st check Poker Tracker and see what I have. Did that, and it only shows his cards for 4 hands that didn't give me much information.

6 SNG Dbl-Up $2 + .16 End 6th
First, let me say, I'm not impressed with Blogger's new opening interface. I find it very confusing but for the time being, I'll keep it up and see if my opinion changes over time.
I decided to write up this session because I was suddenly out after 8 hands and the actual winning cards that could beat me weren't ones I considered the player having. I think his pre-flop RR from my UTG O-R of 2 BB to 3 BB lulled me into thinking he didn't have a great staring hand. He was the BB.
I had AQo and the flop was a pleasing Q 3 4. I had top pair and top kicker. I was feeling good. The BB surprised me in that he bet A-I on that flop. My first question was why? What could he have that would make that flop so great? He might have AQ like me but that seems to be an awfully big bet to me. I doubted he had an open-ended straight or flush draw. I was thinking he more likely would have hit a set with the 3 or 4. The side of me that said it's best you fold was fighting with the side of me that wanted to call and not give up what appeared to be great holdings. In the end that side won and the BB turned over AA. The Turn was a 6 and the River a 4. His A's held up and I was out of there.
In the end, I think the rule that "it's better to be the one pushing all-in than the one calling an all-in push" is what I need to keep more in mind and act appropriately upon. If he didn't feel he had the best hand at that point it's unlikely he'd have bet all-in. It was pretty early in the session for a big bluff like that. I feel it is safe to say he overbet the flop and was just lucky that I was foolish enough to call his all-in bet to give him a nice 1370 chip win instead of the 120 that was in the pot at that point.
Playing low stakes does tend to make losses like that hurt less. Our ole poker guru would say think of it as having put in $200 instead of $2 so that we will be more careful in our play. He has a good point there.

Wow, this updated interface is strange!!! Will take some getting use to. Now to the poker tournament.
This is a $2 + .20 tournament, 2000 chips/7 min blinds. Late Reg 20 min.
The main reason I wanted to write this one up is to note how I could have played it differently.
Merge - $0+$0.00|<> NL - Holdem - 8 players

Pre Flop: (150.00) SolarTed has Ac Qh

I decide to just check and see what the flop brings.
Flop: (250.00, 2 players) 6d Qs 5h
SolarTed checks, fishermanak47 bets 125.00, SolarTed raises to 250.00, fishermanak47 calls 125.00
I hit for top pair and decide to try a check raise and fishermanak47 co-operates.
Turn: (750.00, 2 players) Ah
SolarTed checks, fishermanak47 checks
I now have top two pair and decide to try the check raise again. This time fishermanak47 just checks in return. I think this was my 1st mistake as I let him get a free card on the River and if I had bet he may well have folded.
River: (750.00, 2 players) 8s
SolarTed bets 500.00, fishermanak47 raises to 9,068.00 and is all-in, SolarTed calls 1,216.00 and is all-in
My bigger mistake happened here. I bet around 2/3rds of the pot and fishermank47 RR A-I and I call. I should have reluctantly folded here. The board shows 6 Q 5 A 8. Nothing real scary, but fishermanak47 RR me all-in which said he had something he felt would beat me. My most likely thought would be he might have hit a set on the River, but I didn't take the time to fully consider why he was betting so big and paid the consequences of busting out early in the match.
fishermanak47 shows 9s 7c (Straight, Nine High) (Pre 36%, Flop 20%, Turn 9%)
SolarTed shows Ac Qh (Two Pair, Aces and Queens) (Pre 64%, Flop 80%, Turn 91%)

More Poker Pub, mainly 8/27, maybe some 8/20
Went to the Poker Pub tournament at Famous Sam's the past two Saturday's. Just the 6PM session. On the 20ieth I busted out about 1/2 way through. Last night I made it to the final table. I came in something like 4th or 5th. On my last hand, pocket 2's, it would have better to have folded to an all-in raise that turned out to be pocket 10's. On the plus side of that, I did take some time to think about what I might be up against and did I really want to risk all my chips with just pocket 2's. I expected they would have better cards than I did but was hoping they have just two overcards, such as, AK, AQ, AJ. On the negative side, I didn't really consider that it is better "to push" than "to call" in those situations, particularly since I had such a weak hand, though if had just been overcards, per Pokerstove I was a 53/47 underdog which is close to a toss-up.
The live play experience is helpful even though the play is pretty loose. Most players want to play a hand and will limp in. I've not tried bluffing with a large raise in late position yet, though I have folded to such raises that have come from early or middle position.
To make it to the end (final table) you have to play some not so great hands so your chip stack can keep up with the blinds. I've tended to limp pre-flop, along with other limpers, with hands that I hope will hit the flop and have raised to 2 BB's with more substantial hands. On the limps, and even with the more substantial hands, I still need to remember what my objective was in getting to see the flop in the first place and then fold or bet/RR as is necessary. All too often I still like to continue (if betting takes place) even when I've missed in hopes something will show up on the Turn or River; bad plan.
I'm also trying to pay closer attention to the other players and what kind of hands they are playing. One player to my left showed a LOT of hands that showed he had the goods, so when he raised me, unless I had the nuts, I would fold. Although it was possible he was bluffing some of the time, he had shown he had the goods too often for me to doubt he didn't have them in those situations.
I don't recall if I mentioned it before, but it looks like many of the same folks show up each week for the tournaments at Famous Sam's. Most of the players seem to know each other and at this time I'm the odd man out. With so many of the same players it makes for a fun, enjoyable event.

Carbon Poker lately
This had not been a good month for me so far. I'm down $25.17 as of the 10th. One chunk of that is the $6.03 I lost in the first cash/ring (.02/.04) session I've played in some time; 225 hands. I was actually down around $12 when a player I had marked as loose joined the table and I was able to get a good bit of that $12 back from him.
Mostly though, I play SNG's, HU, and tournaments. Not making the money in most tournaments and hit a bad streak in the 6 Dbl-Up SNG's. I probably should see that I make enough money in my SNG's to pay for my entrance into the tournaments so I'm not draining my bankroll. I also want to work on my cash/ring play so that can become profitable for me as well. Right now, in ring/cash play I simply suck!!

Poker Pub 8/6/11
This is the 2nd time I made it to the Poker Pub at Famous Sam's, 6PM session. They also have a 3PM session and many of the 3PM players stay for the 6PM. It looks like the players who show up are mostly regulars as I remembered several from the last time and they seem to know each other.
First hand I hit a straight on the River and was called, so I got off to a decent start. Later I had a couple of lucky hands and found myself at the final table of 8. I busted shortly after that, but this is the best I've done so far.
This looks like a good group to play with and will help me with my live play even though there is no real money involved.

Live Tournament 8/10/11
Thirty-eight people had signed up ahead of time, don't know exact count of final number. We had 4 or 5 tables.
On a non-poker note, I need to get there much earlier if I want to have time to eat a burger! I was earlier than usual and sat with folks from Mark B's old poker group. The waitress took awhile to show up and by the time my burger made it, it was just about time to sit at the tables and play, so I was only able to eat about half of it. Shame, and was good too.
I had a pretty good night, busted out later than I have in the past, and am only unhappy with my play on the last hand. I did a LOT of FOLDING early on and was beginning to wonder if I'd ever get any decent cards to play as my chip count kept decreasing. I did get AQo once but the flop didn't help so I had to fold to other bets. I had a couple of small pocket pairs that I'd have liked to play but was bet out them before the flop. One middle size pair that I did get to play missed the flop with overcards, so folding to bets again.
After the 1st break, I finally hit some decent playing cards and was on a win streak for several hands in a row and finally had a decent chip stack again by the time of the 2nd break. After the 2nd break blinds started increasing every 10 minutes and by the time of my last hand we were at 500/1000. I had around 10,000+ chips at that point.
Last hand. I was cut-off with AsJs. A couple players had limped in and I did the same, the BT and SB came in and the BB checked. The flop was all red cards A T X. I didn't hit or have the makings for a nut flush I'd hoped for, but did have top pair with a decent/fair kicker. It checked to me and I bet 3000. The BT raised to 10,000 which when I called put me all-in. BT had A T, so he had top two pair. The Turn added a possible straight draw for me, but the River was a blank and I was done for the night.
As I said, except for how I played that hand I was pleased with my play. One thing that comes to mind is how I have difficulty with live play. I went into the flop with the intent of hitting a nut flush or good nut flush draw for the Turn and River. I missed the flush possibilities. I didn't really have a plan for what my actions should be once that happened. The other part of live play I have trouble with is knowing what the the pot size is, so when I made a bet post flop, I think I made it too small to get other players to fold if they didn't have anything decent. As was, I doubt the "A T" would have folded even if I went all-in.
Which brings me to how I responded to the 7000 raise to my 3000 bet. One thing I've been doing better at online is remembering that it's always better to be the one to shove than the one calling the shove. Same applies to a large raise to my raise. I need to stop and think about why that player really did that (this was a new player at the table and the 1st hand he was in, so I had no idea about how he plays). Would he try to bluff me? I don't know enough about him to judge that. Would he make such a large raise if he didn't have more of the flop than I did? I doubted he had AK but might have AQ, but if he only had AQ would he raise my bet by that much? The reasonable decision, for me, at this point, would be to fold and lick my wounds, as there is a pretty good chance I'm already beat and would need to suck out on the Turn or River to win.
Per poker stove, if he had the top two pair I was an 85/15 underdog, and if he had top and bottom pair I was still a 73/27 underdog. Odds were not in my favor. But live I have trouble thinking that all through.
The only other option that I feel might have worked for my AJs was if I RR All-In Pre-F. The ATo likely would have folded. My stack still had some fold equity there.
Nice to see I did better then the past couple of months and looking forward to better play as I continue showing up and expect to make the money one of these times.

Carbon Poker play 8/3/11
Today did not get out to a good start as I found myself losing 3 HU in a row ($2). Part of the problem is at this level CP only has Super Turbo sessions which mean the blinds go up every 3 minutes. The other part is, I don't seem to be in sync with how I need to play to win. I need to examine more what I did in those sessions and see how I might have played better. In one it seemed I was too aggressive and in another too passive.
Will finish later.
Will finish later.

Tues night 7/12/11 Tournament 35 players & online problem
Cake Poker, along with Carbon Poker and Pokerview, have a lot fewer players than Full Tilt and Poker Stars, so it is a lot harder to find a 27 player SNG without long, long waits. This night in particular there were 3 players registered and it seemed to stay there with no-one else signing up. I found a tournament that had late registration with 10 or so players, but that filled out to 35 by the end of late registration.
Overall, I was doing OK. I'd had a couple of early all-in wins that gave me a good starting stack to work with. They pay the top 5. We were down to 9 players when suddenly Comcast went out, both internet and cable. A phone call to them and the recorded voice says there were problems in my area and that they should be fixed in a couple of hours. Three hours later or so they were back but the tournament was long gone. Cake Poker doesn't let you look up tournaments and they only hold a few completed tournaments viewable. I wrote support and they were able to find out where I finished .... 6th!! Grrrr, I had a good chance to finish in the money!! At least this doesn't happen all the time and usually when it does, it's only out for 5-10 minutes. That is one of the negatives of online play.

Live Poker Tourament 7/13/11
This is the 3rd month I've made it to the $25 NL Holdem Tournament held at a local bar & grill here. It has between 25-30 players and is considered a game among friends. It's fun and makes for an enjoyable evening that will be even nicer once I can make it to the money.
This month I made a disastrous call to a 3x my bet on the River. I had trip 7's from the flop with a good kicker and had made a substantial bet on the Turn that was called by the other player. That told me something, like his 3x raise to my River bet, but I wasn't listening. I was only paying attention to MY CARDS, not what the other player might have. If I had, like I should have, I'd have known that my best option on the River after he raised my bet was to fold, no matter how much I didn't want to do that.
When we showed our cards, I felt good about my trip 7's, but the player had hit his flush draw on the River. I'm not sure if it was reasonable for him to call my bet on the Turn on a draw, but he did, and was lucky this time. What's most disturbing about my play is that I didn't bother to look at the board texture to see what he might have been betting/calling on. I had no idea that the board showed a possible flush. One can't win playing that way. I've played enough to know better than that, but this is one of the problems I have with live play vs online play. I've not yet got myself to play with the same diligence/awareness I do with online play, at least when I have a HUD to help me out. I'm sure more live play will help me improve on that.
Not all that many hands later I was down to 400 chips with the blinds 200/400 and it looked like I was going to have a short evening this month. A few all-in's and a bit of luck with the cards and I was back in the game. I lasted for 2 breaks and the chip up. After the 2nd break blinds were 400/800 and the time blinds go up was soon going to change to 15 minutes and after that 10. I had about 2600 chips at that point, and as the BB I had AK. One other player from LP open bet 3 BB and I felt my choice was to fold or go all-in. I chose to go all-in. He had pocket 10's and they held. My poker evening was over for this month. I felt OK about my play that hand as, at best, I had 2-3 more times around the table before I blinded out. True I may have got a better hand, but then I might not have.
Cake poker has the closest play to the live game, except for the blind structure. They go up every 10 minutes where live we start at 30 minutes, but Cake Poker doesn't let you use the HUD so I have to pay better attention to what the other players are doing. My plan is to play a good number of approx 27 player tournaments and/or SNG's during this month to help me improve my play.

PokerView a few hands $4 Ring game 10 player table
Although this was a 10 player table we only had 4-6 players during the time I was there. I had two reasonablely lucky hands with the same player that I managed to get him all-in with me. Neither of my starting hands was great (pocket 4's & pocket 2's) but I hit a set on each. In both cases the other player over played their cards, apparently without considering what I might have. I was a little worried as it was possible for them to make a straight with connected cards or one gappers but decided to risk it on what I thought that player likely would play with.
After my 2nd big win the table dropped down to me and one other player that was sitting out. Being nicely ahead, and wanting to get in some Carbon Poker tonight as well I thought it was a good time to stop and enjoy my winnings ($6.30).

Two sites to play on now
Yesterday I made a deposit to Carbon Poker so I can play for real money on there. I'd not started playing at all until I had the cash in. Its interface is a bit confusing to me as a session is played. I have trouble knowing who is betting and how much without staring at the table a bit. I suppose I'll get use to it as I play more. I test played a couple of sessions yesterday.
1st I played a $2 HU and won to get off to a good start. 2nd I played a 6 player bounty SNG ($1 for prize and $1 for bounty). I just missed the money coming in 3rd but did win $1 by knocking out one player. Much later I played in a 9 player $4 Ring game to get an idea of how the cash games went. I was doing OK until I over extended Trip 10's on the flop with a J kicker, that ran into an aggressive player who also hit Trip 10's but had a K kicker. :-/ Lost my whole $4 on that one. If I was a little more cautious with my betting and/or calling, I'd still have lost but lost less. I felt I had a decent hand to go to the River with but when I found I had opposition I needed to slow down and heed what the other player was doing and what he might have by doing it. I immediately quit after that as I had been playing for several hours on Pokerview before that. I have Rakeback with CP and am interested to see how that works.
Carbon Poker is able to use Poker Tracker by selecting the Merge Network. It was nice to have that back again, though some of the items are hard to see with the type of tables Carbon Poker uses.
That brings me to Pokerview. They had a 6 player $4 Ring game open that I joined. No webcam tables with players at that level. I got off to a poor start dropping my $4 then another $1.92. Mainly poor play choices on my part rather than any bad beats. Some time after that the tide turned and I was $10+ ahead. I'd already been playing for a couple of hours so it would have been a good idea for me to stop, but alas I didn't. Not much happened for another hour or so (a little up, a little down), then I started in a losing streak. Some due to poor play, others my cards didn't hold up. I stuck in there, being mentally on tilt if my play wasn't on tilt (it seemed no matter what I had, the other player had better (A5 loses to A3, KK loses to Qx when the board pairs Q's) and after another hour or more I finally quit and was down $5+. I'm a slow learner!
Expecting to play better this evening.

PokerView Hand History Re-Player Links
I'd been trying to find a way to convert the hands from PokerView's hand re-player with little success. There are some Everleaf hand converters out there but they did not do a good job with PokerView hands. PokerView's hand replayer has code for links to the re-player for that hand, on an HTTP:// and the other [url=http://....]. I don't know what the bracketed one is for. The third of code is the hand play itself. That's the one I've tried the hand converters on.
I'm going to post links to two poorly played hands from tonight's 6 player $.02/.04 Ring game session. The first I didn't take the time consider what the other player might have that could beat me, and the second I wanted to see the other players cards even though I was pretty sure his All-In mean he had the Flush from the all one suit Flop. A bit costly, but intentional.
I'm not sure if I'll come back later and talk about them or not. This post is mainly for anyone interested to see how this feature from PokerView works.
1) JJ vs 99 JJ set vs unknown till River
2) 77 vs likely Flush 77 Set vs likely Flush

The Red Garter Saloon
Now isn't that a nifty name for a poker den of iniquity??? A lot better than "Trident" where these poker tournaments have been taking place over the past few months.
This is the first time I've attended and I found it to be a lot of fun. There were 20 some players and I ended up in the 13-15 range. Near the end of my time my play wasn't that great.
That's all for now. I just wanted to get a post started and will add a bit more later.

$3 + .30 Tournament and .02/.04 10 Ring from last night
When I joined the tourney they were in level 2 with around 30 people. It has a nice stack size (10,000) and decent time between levels (10 min). I need to learn to be more patient and to get off, a good hand that isn't the nuts when there are likely better hands or the nuts out there from other players.
My demise in this tourney was with 89s from CO that I decided to call EP2 3 1/2 BB O-R by the EP2 player with 2 others, and pre-flop we had a total of 5 in the pot. 1st I should have paid more attention to the O-R rather than just deciding to jump in with my suited connectors. My idea was to call with a limp with others, but instead decided to call the much larger O-R. I wanted to start building a stack with lessor hands hoping to connect onf the flop while the blinds were still low, and I had a hand I thought I could get off of without too much trouble. That turned out not to be true. :-/
The flop came Qh 3c 10h, EP2 made a min raise of 40, rest called. Turn Jc. That gave me the lower end of a straight (8 thru Q). I thought the most likely hand that could beat me would be AK, but I didn't feel from the initial betting anyone had that. EP2 bet 1.6x the pot, not a good sign for me. He was called, I and one other called. River 7c. If the betting on the Turn wasn't a clue I should fold, this was an even scarier card as there was now a possible flush out there. EP2 bet the pot of 7300, he was raised A-I, and I decided to call w/my last 8010 chips. EP2 actually did have the AK beating out my straight. There was no flush. I was gone.
All I needed to do was fold and be a bit more patient and I'd still be in the tourney and maybe make it to the top 15 and in the money. Still a very hard lesson for me to learn.
Although I can get the hand history for a particular hand, I've not found a hand converter that does a good job of converting PokerView's Everleaf Gaming hand. Flop/Turn/River, after I edited lowercase A, K, Q, J, T to uppercase, it saw the cards BUT in the final results it gave chips to two players who were All-In and lost. Not sure why and if it is possible to edit the hand history to prevent that. I tried a couple of other hand converters and they either didn't recognize the hand or they gave mixed results.
On to last night's Ring game. I played $.02/$.04 on a 10 player table, but we only had 3 or 4 playing at any one time, with finally 5 near my ending play. Ring games let you use the webcam option (they have tables for for both webcam and non-webcam), and so far, I like that added feature. It feels much more like you are playing a real person. I didn't notice a lot that it seemed you could pick up tells per se, but it does show you how much attention a player is paying. One player late in the session starting talking to someone out of camera range. A player would stretch and yawn and look like they might be getting tired. I know I did a lot of moving around that would indicate to other players that I was distracted.
My play was ok most of the time. My biggest blunder was re-raising A-I with pocket 10's post-flop to an aggressive player who, that hand, had pocket A's. Earlier I had got him off of some hands when I re-raised him and was hoping I would again.
Much later a player came in who either didn't know how to play the game or liked the rush of making big bets and/or going all-in with min cards. One of the 1st plays I saw him make was going all-in w/72o after he hit the 7 on the flop. He was beat by a Q7o. He would re-load after a defeat for the max of $4 at this table. A few hands later I had pocket 10's again (I seemed to pick them up a few times last night), and this same player opened all-in. Because of what I'd seen in his play I called him. He had Ax so now all I had to do was hope he didn't hit an Ace or suck out on the River. My pocket 10's held up and I was now above even again!! Not too long after that I called it a night as I was tired. It would have been nice to stick around and see if I could win some more $$ from that player, but it is not good to play when you find yourself feeling quite tired, at least it isn't for me. :-)
That's it for now. I need to play a few Double Up's and get back my $3 I lost from the tournament. They have 6 and 10 player Double Up's, and with only 6 players it usually doesn't take too long to get down to the final 3.

A few more comments on my early PokerView experiences
One thing that PokerView does not have is a good a way to review hands after you complete play and at this point, neither Poker Tracker nor Holdem' Manager can be used with the site. They do have a hand player reviewer that is rather nice but a bit clunky in action. You can click on a hand you want to see that was just played and it might come up that it can't find the database. So, to write up a session, like I've done in the past, means I have to REMEMBER what happened and I've not good at that. Nor do I have a way to know how many hands I've played Ring games or otherwise. They don't have a way to make online notes on any of the players.
I've been impressed, so far, with PokerView's support and LIVE help. I'm not at all sure they'll be able to keep that up if they ever take off and become the size of ye ole Full Tilt or Poker Stars, but while it last it's great. Last night I was having trouble getting the Lobby to come up (it was taking from 3-6 minutes) and my webcam to function. After talking with the online LIVE chat person, she decided to refer me to her manager. The manager decided she'd like to TeamViewer with me on my computer, and then we chatted live through Skype. The bringing up the Lobby seemed to resolve itself and she discovered the system was trying to come up with a different webcam than the one I was using. Thanks to my ole poker coach I already had TeamViewer and Skype on my computer.
After we finally got my Ring game session going, she ask me questions about how I liked the interface. It appears we may be at the "live" beta stage and they are making continuing changes to the system while we play. I got to offer my opinion about various issues I have (they don't say/print in the chat window what the actual winning hand is, you have to look at the cards it and figure it out for yourself. That would be OK but the hand closes too quickly after the River and the chat window doesn't have a freeze scrolling so you can't keep the results in place to read them). .She said, if I have any future problems to contact her. I ask her how and she said through Skype. I now have the Skype support number. They still have a lot of work to do, including getting a lot more players, as it is hard to find SNG's to play and Ring games below the $0.50/$1.00 level. You can usually find a Tournament but they end up with less than 100 players after an hour's worth of late registration, and are all of the lower dollar buy-in level (from $.01 to $2 that seem to have players when I've been online).
So far I've managed to break even with my initial play. Ring games are not my best play and I have a tendency to overplay hands and not give the other player credit for having the hand that I know will beat me. One my best pots last night was when I was on the other side of that. The other player felt they were beat but had to "look me up" to be sure.
One interesting side point that happened during a ring game last night is another person from Tucson, AZ entered the Ring game webcam session. No one I know, but it was interesting to find that this early in the site's life another Tucsonan was there.
I moved my lamp to in back of my computer desk so I now have light coming directly onto my face and I get a brighter image of myself. Lighting is what many of the players need to work on so we can see them better. I'll post a picture that shows that at the end of this post.
I learned the hard way, that you should take a look in the mirror BEFORE you subject yourself to webcam viewing. Yesterday morning, I got up to do a couple of things intending to head back to bed shortly, so didn't deal with any "out of bed grooming" but got distracted, and on here in a webcam Ring game on PokerView. After playing for a half-hour or more, I was noticing that my hair looked a bit disheveled and eventually went to check it. Well, I'd not combed my hair yet for the day. It could have been a lot worse, but due my lacking much of my hair on my head, there wasn't a lot to make me Einstein-ish looking.
Enough for this morning. Following is the table picture with better lighting for me.

What Now Brown Cow? My Poker update since Poker's Black Friday
Well it came as a sudden shock to the system to find the primary sites I play real money poker on had been closed down by the US DOJ on what appear to be pretty serious charges. I'm not sure some of that may must be the DOJ tossing all the shirt they can find at the fan and seeing how much of it will stick. That's neither here nor there at the moment, as the reality is, none of sites (Full TIlt & Poker Stars in my case) are allowing US players any kind of cash play, even if it's only freerolls, PERIOD!. The money we have there is in some sort of limbo, though this week Poker Stars wants us to cash out our funds NOW. That's a whole big $10.54 for me. No additional word from Full Tilt yet where I have between $275 and $375, depending how they handle the Tournament and Step tickets.
Since April 15th I've been playing on the play money side of these sites, mainly Full Tilt. Wow, how much my game has changed since I started Mark B's classes and weekly group meetings from my Poker Stars play money days. When you're playing play money you don't realize just how much different playing with real money is. I always wanted to win whether it was play money or not. I wasn't one of those All-In every hand play money players; I wanted to play well. Now I clearly see how much different the play is. There are so many hands I won't play now that I did back then and I see the play money players playing now.
Certainly if you are just going to play for fun and never really expect to be involved in cash games, except for maybe some friendly home games, then online play money poker is the way you should go. I still feel there is a place for play money sessions for the more serious poker player, at least for a short time, such as when they are learning about a new form of the game, such as Omaha. It won't teach you how to play real money players, but if you are lucky and get onto a table where the players actually try to play poker, it will help you get an idea of how Omaha hands run, and then when you get back to the real money Omaha tables, you'll have a bit better understanding of the cards flow.
Now, yesterday I decided to the plunge and try a poker site that is still taking US players. I was originally thinking about Carbon Poker (one of the weekly group folks has re-started there). But in a Card Player email they talked about a new site, PokerView that has a webcam options so you can actually see the other players you are playing. I checked it out and decided to give it try. If you're a real serious poker player, this site isn't ready for your prime time yet. It took a bit of juggling things around to get the webcam working and $$$ into the site. It seems to work best with the Firefox browser. They are a small site with only a few hundred to somewhat over a 1000 players at any one time and I think, but don't know for sure, that may also include the play money players. They also have human looking avatars for rooms that don't use the webcam.

Sessions yesterday and tonight
I haven't posted in awhile. It would be good to get back to that as it does allow me to analyze my play which I don't do often enough. Tonight I'm just going to paste part of email I wrote about these sessions.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You probably read my email about Poker After Dark doing a Pot Limit Omaha cash game this week. Each player starts with $100,000. The usual announcer has Andy Block helping with the commentary. Since I don’t understand PLO or even Omaha itself that well, I decided yesterday to go to Full Tilt play money section and play some hands hoping it would give me a better idea of how Omaha hand play . I intended to play pot-limit but ended up in no-limit. I only had about 1200-1300 play money chips and I quickly lost those and had to reload another free 1000. Then I got lucky with all the all-in 1000 chips players who drop in, shoot their load in one hand, reload if they can, repeat the process. Anyway I got decent chip stack so I could risk that 1000. By the time I finished with no-limit I had 84,000 chips. Then I decided to try my original plan to play pot-limit. Generally the players here played in a more reasonable fashion, but I got lucky early on with the 1000 I started with (max to start a session with) and by the time I stopped late this morning I had another 30,000 plus play chips. I started sometime after 6PM and ended around 9AM or 10AM this morning with a break to watch last night’s Poker After Dark show. To say the least, it was fun, and since it was play chips no pressure and dollar worries, and it did provide what I was looking for ….. how do the Omaha cards play out with what kind of hands.
There were two things I didn’t realize about
Omaha and your needing to play 2 hole cards and only 3 board cards. 1) To make
a flush your two hole cards have to be the same suit, 2) because you have to
play your two hole cards, though the board might be able to go up to a, say Q
high straight, you may only be able to go Jack high, 3) having two pocket pairs
when one pair hits the board DOES NOT MEAN you have a full house (psychologically,
even though I know that’s the case, it still feels like it should be). That
last one caught me a few times when I
was wondering my the chips were going the other way when I had a full house!!! I
found myself looking back on FT’s hand history to find out why a hand won as I
somehow missed what happened, sometimes even when it was my cards (I was
looking for thing and thought that was why I won, when I actually won with the
flush).
Don’t know when I might try some play with real
money as playing Omaha isn’t high on my list at moment.
Tonight I was playing the Daily Dollar and
$.02/$.05 Rush (to get in my last day of Take 2 and qualify for my $5). Daily
Dollar was doing OK, but Rush was going poorly. Daily Dollar ended in a flash. Blinds were
100/200 and I had pocket K’s, the big stack had raised limps to 3 BB and I
decided to go all-in and if all goes well he doubles me up. The 1st
part of that plan went well and he showed A9o, one overcard. The flop was fine,
6 9 7 but the turn came up with another 9 and the river a Q and I was gone. The
plus side of it was I concentrate more on my Rush session As I said it had not been going well. After
100 hands I was down $1.99, 200 hands $1.76, and 300 hands $.400. Not too long
after that I was down $5+ and heading into a “poor me” tilt state. Then as I
was able to concentrate more, the tide turned and by the end of 400 hands I was
up $8.56 when I stopped. I was afraid I was going to have to play a lot more
hands before I got to the plus side.
I’ve been trying to do well in the $1 Rush On
Demand tournaments which don’t pay much till you get near the top but more
often than not I don’t make even the chump change money. Sometimes, of course,
it’s just one or two poor call decisions, but other times it’s less clear what’s
happening. Blinds are only 3 min and they can catch up with you before you know
it.

2 HU $5 + .25 End 1st Won $10 35 Hands
Hard to believe I've not played any online poker for the past couple of days. Probably the break was good for me.
Started the day with a HU's and for the 1st 20 hands I had a small chip lead. On hand 21 I had Ah Kd on the BT and Open-Raised 2 BB and was RR to 100. I decided to just call. The other player is from Russia so I suspect he has an Ace. The Flop 5s 6s Ad. I pair my Ace w/a pretty good kicker. BB bets 120 into the 200 pot and I just call. I've decided to slow play my hand BUT the BB could easily be going with Ax where x is a rag (low) card. Turn Qd. BB bets 260 into the 440 pot and I just call again. I'm not too worried about the Q. River 5d. I don't like that card as I put him on Ax and if he had a 5 he would have trip 5's OR a FH. I'm not worried about his having a flush. He bets only 230 into the 960 pot, which is pretty low if he has a winning hand, but he could be low betting hoping I don't fold and will give him something. I just call since with one pair there are a lot of ways he could beat me. He shows Ac 9h. Pretty much the kind of hand I expected his to have. I win and now have a nice chip lead.

Fast forward to the last hand. This was a very iffy one for me to call and I was very lucky on the River.
I'm on the BT w/KcKd, BB only has 640 chips left. I decide to slow play my pocket K's and hope the BB hits something worthwhile that will let me win all his chips. He just calls. Flop Kh Qh Ah. Yuck. Not the kind of hand I want to see. I now have a very nice set but the board shows a possible made flush that I have no part of. BB checks and I make a min bet of 30 into the 60 pot. BB check-raises to 90 and I decide to RR to 210 which should give a pretty idea of how much in love with the hearts flop he is. Rats, he RR All-In. He could be on a flush draw, but much more likely he has the made flush. It will cost me 430 in chips to call him and if I can somehow win this session is over. If I lose he'll be well back into the game. I think about it for awhile, and decide to go for it. The worse case scenario he'll double up; I'm hoping he'll only be on a draw. And, as I likely expected, he has the made flush with Jh 6h. Now I can just hope for a 4th K or the board doubles up to give me a FH. Turn 8d. Not looking good. River Ad. WOW, I hit it and session is over. Phew!!

PS 10 SNG 50/50 T $1.08 End 2nd Won $2.78
Poker Stars is changing its Double or Nothing (DON) 10 player matches where the top 5 divide up the pool evenly, to a 50/50 format where the pool is divided up by 1/5 of the pool plus .03333 cents per 100 chips. I had a very successful set of cards my 1st play and won $4.11 instead of the usual $2. Since then I've been up and down with mixed play. At the $1 level they have two options: 1) $1.11 is normal play and 2) $1.08 it Turbo where the blinds increase every 3 minutes instead of the usual 6 minutes. What that means with the 50/50 system it is a bit harder to recoup your losses when you bust out of the top 5, as you can make the top 5 but only pick up 25-30 cents instead of the DON 85 cents. I played way too long last night and was really too tired to keep playing but I didn't listen to that and paid the consequences of sloppy play. Anyway that's not the main point of this post.
Today I decided I'm just doing a quick HU on Full Tilt and one 50/50 on Poker Stars, then do some other stuff I want to do and back to poker later tonight. I manged to win my FT HU and was feeling good about poker today and moved over to a PS 50/50 Turbo. On hand 6 in EP2 I woke up to KK and thought, nice, a good chance to pick up some early chips!! Blinds were 20/40 and I Open-Raised 2 1/2 BB (100), enough to likely build some pot (at this level players like to play) and not scare folks away plus if an Ace falls on the flop and I feel I have to get away from the hand it won't be too hard to do. There were 3 callers including the SB.
The Flop was 7d 10h 6d. Not bad for my K's. I bet 230 into the 440 pot, HJ calls and rest fold. Turn 5d. This is where everything I was hoping for begins to fall apart. The board has 3 diamonds, 5, 6, & 7, making possible a flush and even a straight flush as well as just an ordinary straight. I do have a 2nd nut high flush draw, so it's not all bad. I check and HJ bets 240 into the 900 pot and I decide to just call. I didn't feel raising him would do much good and if he has a flush down I don't want to dump too many chips into it and I do have that 2nd nut high flush draw that I felt was worth checking out on the River.
The River was 3h. Not likely to have changed much but opens up a possible straight from the low side. Here is where I go off the deep end. I check and HJ goes All-In with their last 790 chips. At this point I only have pocket K's against possible straights and flushes and the HJ's going All-In most likely indicates he has the flush, which if I'd hit the draw could make calling him worthwhile, otherwise my best bet is to fold, lick my wounds, and live to fight another day. BUT NO, I decide to call and he shows 9d 4d, indeed having hit the flush on the Turn. I'm down to 100 chips and feeling very down and definitely on tilt!!! BUT as you see in the title, the story does not end there!!
I'm not going into the details, but a lot of luck with All-In's and some patience folding with so-so cards and low chips let me build my chips back and become a winner. I liked the graph from Poker Tracker so am inserting it here:

Sometimes the poker gods do smile on you :-) Other times they don't. :-)
This 1st hand was unbelievable! I didn’t realize what terrible shape I was in after the flop as pepecash69 slow played the flop and the turn so I had no reason to back off. After the flop per Poker Stove pepecash69 was a 99.39% chance to win and I was a mere 0.609%, but as I said the poker gods were with me on the Turn & River!!

At HU (hand 90) I had 12,255 chips to 1245 and I thought I’d be able to pull out 1st but I wasn’t able to put the crush on him and the poker gods were more on his side then mine.
Hand 95 I have 88 vs K5 (66/44 my favor), board turned out K 3 5 2 J, He doubles up to 2490
Hand 114 I have 33 vs AJ (53/47 my favor), board turned out 5 5 A 2 8. He doubles up to 4820
Hand 123 I have QQ vs Ad 2d (68/32 my favor), board turned out 5c 8c Ah 4d Kd. He doubles up to 8920 to my 4580
Hand 135 I have Ac Tc vs Kh 9d (67/33 my favor), board turned out 9c 4c 6h 2c 6d. Board hits me for a change, I now have 9580 to his 3920
Hand 162 I have 33 vs A9 (54/46 my favor), board turned out T 6 4 T 6. Double pairing on the River to negate my 3’s and make his Ace good.. He doubles up to 6940
Hand 181 I have As 8s vs 9 8 (71/29 my favor), board turns out Q T 9 9 8. He doubles up to 6280.
Hand 185 I mis-read my hand thinking I have a straight. I’m down to 4620
Hand 185 I have Qs 5s vs Qc Jc (70/30 his favor). He raised my O-R 2 BB bet that would put me A-I, and I decided to gamble and see if the board might go my way on this one. It didn’t ….. 6 K 4 A 3. Session finally over. I end up 2nd.
Overall though, what has stuck with me most on this one is the hand where I had less than 1% chance of winning after the flop and I won!!! :-)

HU two days, different results
Yesterday I played a HU to start my day. Hand 1 I had AQo and the other player went All-In Pre-Flop. He had J7o. Board went 9 3 8 J T. I lucked out hitting a straight on the River. I really expected to see better pocket cards from him when I called his All-In.
After that when I checked Poker Tracker I couldn't get it to show this session, or if it did, it didn't show my other February sessions. Tried a few things with no change then noticed that my name was entered twice in the player list. One name shows the past, the other this one HU session. Not sure what was going on, but checking the forums on PT and there solution was to create a new DB from the Processed file folder. Did that and many, many hours later that completed. Did a comparison of this new DB and the old and noticed some January sessions were missing in the new. Couldn't figure out why as they were all done here and on this PC (not at MB's or on my portable). Requested a hand history on those 6 tournaments (actually did a date range that included them) and got that back. Edited the tournament results and was almost on track, except there seemed to be one more small error of a dollar in the net for January 2011. Searched that out and found a difference in a re-buy event of a dollar. Fixed that. Now I have to decide if I want to check the other months to fix any discrepancies. Is nice I have this lil notebook that has all my sessions from 8/30/08 forward in it so I can find out the results of a tournament when needed.
There apparently was some problem with my 'puter when the PT issue occurred. I went to Excel and it wanted to start installing, which it should not do. Rebooted my computer and that fixed that problem but I still had PT to deal with. Glad the re-boot worked!
That brings us to today's HU session. This one went 20 hands. I was SB w/Kd 6d and O-R 2 BB, BB RR to 90 and I called. I wasn't happy with that but wanted to see the flop. Flop 4d Ks 7d. Not a bad flop for me. My K doesn't have a very good kicker but I have flush draw with K high. BB decides to bet All-In w/their 1615 chips and I decide to call as I had a good number of outs. He shows Ah 8h. He hit nothing on the flop. That surprised me. Turn 5c. That gave the BB a gutshot straight draw. River A. He now has best pair and it's over and I'm outta there. I have a beautiful rising EV line for this one, but the $$$$ green line is for the pits!

2 HU $5 + .50 End 1st 1 Hand
Took a chance on the 1st hand when the other player O-R All-In. I had AQo. He had J7o. Board went 9 3 8 J by the Turn and it looked like I was going to lose, but a 10 fell on the River giving me a straight and I won!! Phew!!
Wasn't sure if he really had something or was just going All-In because that is the way he likes to play. I did make a "country" consideration before I decided to call expecting that he might only have Ax; he had worse cards than I expected BUT he ALMOST won anyway!!

2 HU $5 + .50 34 Hands End 2nd
Got off to a good start then on the 9th hand where I hit a set w/99 we went to the River and he hit a staright w/8T. That knocked me back to 920 chips and I didn't recover from that due to poor play on my part. Not sure if I'd bet stronger on the flop it would have made a difference as he had an up and down straight draw.
I did feel good on an assumption I made on hand #2. I had QTo as the SB and O-R 2 BB.BB RR me to 100 and since I was up a few chips, I decided to call. Flop KKT. I paired my 10 but KK doesn't look good for me. BB checks and I bet 100 into the 200 pot to test the waters. He calls. Not sure what that means beyond he doesn't want to push it at this point, but likely he doesn't have K unless he's slow playing it. River 10c. I know have a FH but if the BB has a K they have a better FH than me. BB checks and I decide to just check too. River Ad. I actually don't mind that. BB bets the pot of 400. I think about it and decide he mostly likely had Ax where x is neither a K or a 10, however to be on the safe side I only call. I was correct, he had As 8s. I win, have a nice lead and am feeling pretty good about this session.
Too bad it fell apart a few hands later. Would have better yet if I had played better after that hit as I had enough chips to make a comeback.

2 HU $5 + .50 End 2nd 186 hands
This one probably went too long but it was hard to play against someone who folded a lot, particularly when I had some really nice cards. The reason for this post though, is the last few hands I just couldn't win. :-/
Hand 179 I have 2480 chips to his 340. I have Ac 4d blinds 60/120. I O-R 2 BB and he goes all in. I call. He has 10d 5d. The board plays out 10h Js Jc 10s 5h. He doubles up to 920.
Hand 182. I have Ac Qd, 1920 chips, blinds 80/160. He O-R A-I and I call. He shows Jh Kc. The board plays out Jc 2d 6d 10h 10s. Again he doubles up.
Hand 186, last hand. I have Ks 9c, 600 chips. He limps in, I RR to A-I. He has 8h 7h. The board plays out Js 5s Kc 4c 6d. He hits a straight on the River. I'm down for the count.
Poker can be very cruel sometimes!! :-?
I did have one lucky River earlier where I'd have lost but the board paired on the River giving both of us the same FH.

1 HU, 2 Six Max SNG, 1 Nine SNG
I got off to a wonderful start with my HU match winning that in 4 hands. Hand 2 I had AQo and the flop came A Q 8. The Turn & River 5 A. The other player had AJo and we bet up on the River. He had 60 left when it was over.
My two 6 max SNG's didn't go well, mostly due to cards not hitting my way. In the 1st match I had JJ vs 94s. They hit a 9 on the Flop and the River. The 2nd I had AA vs TT. All went well until the River when they hit a 3rd 10. Grrrr ..... but that's the way the cards go some matches.
The 9 SNG I went out 6th due mainly to my poor play. I called two possible or greater flushes in the near last hands and lost. This one at least, I could have played better and my fate was in my hands and not the cards.
Took a break after that.

Lost post plus a winner turbo 6 max
I created a post earlier today titled "All's well that ends well" and thought I posted it. I found it here in the edit mode and clicked on "Publish Post" and got an error message. Post was gone, not in draft. :-/ I'm not going to recreate it.
Briefly I played three $5 SNG sessions, two 6 max and one 9 player. The 1st two I played 3 hands altogether for about 2 minutes. The 1st on hand two I had QQ and was raised All-In with a K showing in the flop. I opted to call when I should have folded and indeed he had a King ... out with two hands!!
The 2nd I only made it to hand 1. I had KTo and decided to limp in just to see if the flop might bring me something good. The flop came down TT8, I had trip 10's with a good kicker. Player to my left went A-I and I called. He had T9s and hit a 9 on the Turn. Over and out!! :-/
I was tired when I started these sessions but decided to play ONE MORE!! This time a 9 player one. I ended up 1st and ahead for those three sessions. I quit then and smartly went to bed.
Tonight I played a 6 player $5 SNG and bounced out 3rd. I had QQ and the other player played a wide range of hands. The flop was 10 2 9 and we ended up All-In. This time he had decent cards AK. The Turn was a 3 but on the River he hit a K and I was gone on the bubble! I felt I gave it a good shot, the cards just didn't fall my way that hand.
I was debating what I might play next and noticed there were a lot of $6 Turbo sessions in the list. Turbo here means 1500 chips with 3 min blinds. I'm not keen on Turbo's but when I looked at the players in the various sessions I noticed many of them were playing multiple sessions, so I decided to try one. Four of the six players were playing multiple sessions (4, 8, and 11), the other player playing one session was to my right. That put me in a pretty good position to try to steal blinds. It went better than I expected, I had some decent cards as well, and ended up 1st!! When I find lots of the players playing 4 or more sessions I'll consider trying some more of those.

2 HU one $2 other $5, End 2nd & 1st 48 & 43 Hands
Mainly blogging these because of the $5 HU. The $2 I could have played better, mainly making calls when I should have folded. Cards also didn't fall my way, but I didn't help that any with my overall play.
The $5 I had a pretty aggressive player who liked to show me his not so good pocket cards when I folded to his bets. He did tend to bluff and I did get caught a couple of times. Hand 4 I was knocked down to 820 chips when he paired a 9 on the River to my Ace high with the board paired twice.
Hand 8 I ended up calling his bluff and winning. As the SB I had 1190 chips w/98o, I O-R 2 BB and he RR me to 3 BB, I called. Flop 10h 9h 3d. He bet 200 into the 240 pot and I decided to raise him to 400 to see how serious he was. Though I'd paired my 9, I was hoping he'd fold. He called. Turn 6d. He checked and I checked. River 10c. I wasn't happy with that but I didn't feel he had a 10. He bets All-In w/ 1280 chips. I think about it a bit, and partly based on his earlier play, I decide to call. He only had Ac Js. I win and he's down to 600 chips. Things are looking up for me. He goes into a continual All-In bet or raise mode.
Hand 12. I have KcJc as SB and O-R 2 BB, he RR All-In with 680. I call. He shows Jh 10c. Looks good for me, K vs 10. Flop 7c 5s 4s. So far so good. Turn 10h. Rats! River 8c. He doubles up and is back in this session. :-/
Hand 15. I'm the BB w/AQs and 1870 chips. He O-R 3 BB and I RR to 150. He RR's All-In and I call. He has pocket 2's and they hold up. I'm down to 800 chips. :-/ Next hand I take a chance he is bluffing again, and one more time I end up correct.
Hand 16. I'm SB w/T9o, 785 chips and O-R 2 BB, he calls. Flop Kh Jh Qh. I have a straight but no hearts. BB checks and I bet the pot of 120 hoping he folds, but he calls. Turn 6h. Nuts, now he only needs one heart to have the flush. He checks and I check. Not sure, but I'm pretty sure that means he doesn't have the flush. River 6s. He goes All-In. I think about it and still feel I most likely have the best hand, and if not, well, that's the way it goes. I call. He shows 8s Js. I win and am back in the session w/1600 chips.
Hand 18. I'm SB w/KTo and 1575 chips. I O-R 2 BB and he calls. Flop 9h 4s Kh. My K is paired. He checks and I check. Turn 9d. The board is now paired. He bets 90 into the 120 pot and I decide to raise him to 180; he RR's me to 270 and I call. Not a good sign for me. River 6h. He bets 630 into the 660 pot. I don't like that, but he has bluffed before, so I decide to call him and he shows 8c 9s, having hit trip 9's on the Turn. I'm now down to 580 chips. :-/
I play cautiously and try not fall into his baiting traps. Hand 24 I have AJs. Turn and River are AA and I beat his AJo. I'm up to 920 chips. Hand 39 I'm disappointed he folds as the SB when I have QQ. Hand 40 I have pocket 5's and hit my set on the Flop. I slow play them and bet the 320 pot on the River, win and now have the lead once again with 1530 chips.
Hand 42. Another chancy hand when he goes All-In on the River with the board showing 3s Ad 2d Kd Jd. I have Kh 8d. I have the flush but only 8 high. Again I decide he likely is bluffing and call. Indeed he was with Qc 3c. He's down to 100 chips and things are looking very UP for me!! :-)
Hand 43. I have K9o vs K5o for him. I pair my 9 on the flop and it holds I win.
Being patience and willing to take chances when I could have the winning hand, based on how he often was playing (he showed me a lot of poor pocket cards he'd big bet on) , paid off. Yes he could have had the goods on those calls but I felt I needed to take that gamble to win against him.

3 HU sessions $2 + .15 lost 1, won 2 , 81, 8, & 13 hands
One was yesterday. I intended to play more poker but didn't get around to it. The other two I did this morning and was an experiment of playing two HU at a time. Not really my cup of tea. My need to act comes all to quick and I barely get to see the cards and pick up very little on how the other player is playing. It was nice to win those two though.
The session yesterday had mixed play.Things were going OK until hand 30. I was BB w/3c 8c and SB limped in. Flop 5c Ac 3d. I pair my 3 and have a flush draw with very weak hole cards. I bet 1/2 the pot to see if there is any action and the SB calls, which at this low level doesn't tell very much, except likely he doesn't have an Ace. Turn Js. I decide to check and SB bets the pot of 120. I decide to call, though I did so reluctantly. River 8h. I now have two pair, so if the SB paired with the J on the Turn, I'll be in good shape. I decide to just check and the SB bets the pot again. Feeling I'm in pretty good shape I call. SB shows Jd 3s having hit a better two pair on the Turn. That hurt.
I bounced up and down hitting a high around 1240 and low around 600. Hand 78 I decided to take a chance on a low card flush calling the BB bets and lost to a K high flush. That knocked me down to 240 chips and I didn't recover from that. Obviously I could have made better choices!

2 HU $5 + .50 End 1st 47 Hands
Been awhile since I've posted but a few thoughts passed through my mind while playing this session. As a brief catch-up I've been on a mostly downward spiral since about mid December when my bankroll hit a high of around $417 and I was feeling pretty good about seeing it get even bigger. Now I'm just over $300.
A good chunk of it is do RUSH that I still fall into the pattern of win little, lose big. Though mostly due to poor choices on my part there were a few bad beats as well. Some days it seems the cards just don't go my way and I let that put me into a down, funky mindset. Not good!! Sometimes that seems to bother me more than some of the costly, stupid plays I make, that I know better than to make! Noticing that down feeling in the Rush session, during one my semi-breaks (catching up marking were players are from) and keeping track on Poker Tracker if I'm up or down (yes I know it's suppose to be how I play the cards, but I feel better knowing where my $$$ are going, in part to know if it's probably best I stop playing at that point), I remembered from some of our guru sessions he had us start talking about how our week went, to begin with a positive affirmation. I have one in the front of my poker record book but for some time now haven't been checking it out before I start play, including this morning. Anyway the other night, when I was feeling on tilt before the next 25-50 hands I decided to read it: "I am a lucky person and a skillful, winning poker player. A powerful, winning force surrounds me." It does help quiet those doldrums and lets me concentrate on my play and not my negative feelings.
Anyway back to why I decided to make a post after that HU game this morning. Two items I believe.
1) I pay attention to the other players moves, particularly how often they fold, and when I get a chance to see them, what kind of cards they are playing when they make moves. I often find players fold pre-flop or fold if I make a bet (small or large), then boom they'll make a bet, maybe a big one. That suggest to me they have something and if the board shows a likely straight or flush possibility, I'd better be able to beat it if I'm going to call their bet. What I find myself doing, all to often, is loving my good pocket cards (JJ-AA, AK, AQ), or maybe I've hit two pair on the Turn or the River and I can't let go of them and call, and of course, take a big hit, or I'm gone. This happened today and I had been remarking to myself about how I need to remember that this player is folding a lot and if he bets I need to remember that it means likely he has something, BUT when the time came where I should fold on the Turn and then on the River, I let those thoughts disappear from my mind.
Hand 16, blinds 10/20, I have 1770 chips, they have 1210. I'm on the BTN/SB with Q7o and make my often 2 BB O-R in this situation with almost any two cards in HU. BB calls. Flop 2s Qd 6s, I pair my Q but don't have a very good kicker. We both check; I didn't want to push anything yet. Turn 5s. I now also have a flush draw with a low high card. BB checks and I bet 1/2 the pot (40) and he raises me to 200. That's a flag indicating he has something and I wonder if he might have the flush and if he does and I hit the flush on the River could he beat my 7 high (very likely) and Call. River Kd. I don't hit the flush and now a paired K would beat me. BB bets the pot of 480. Another BIG flag to me. I don't think he has a K but there's an awfully good chance he has the flush that I can't beat. Do I listen to myself???? NO. I call and he shows As Qs, the nut flush that he hit on the Turn. I'm knocked down to 1050 chips. Not critical, but that was an unnecessary loss of chips for me.
2) This one was just a reminder to myself on the importance of having a good kicker!! Last hand.
Hand 47. Blinds 20/40, I have 1745 chips, SB 1195. I have Kh 3h. SB limps in for 40 and I check. Flop: 9s 3c 3d. How nice, I have trip 3's!! I decide to check to see what the SB will do, hoping he bets so I can call him without showing the strength of my hand, and he obliges by betting the pot of 80 and I call. Now what I didn't do at this point (as noted in point 1) is consider what he may be betting on. I make a general assumption that he has some kind of decent pair, I don't think at all of his maybe having hit a set with the 9; I only thought about MY hand MY cards!! Turn 10d. I check and he bets the pot again (240). Per my plan I only call. I worry a bit that he might have a diamond flush draw but I'm still married to my trip 3's. River 2s. I feel good about that card and I'm expecting to win this one!! I decide to bet almost 1/2 the 720 pot (320) as now is the time I want to act and get as many of his chips as I can. He raises me all-in with his last 855 chips and I instant call. Now why would he do that if he doesn't feel he has the winning hand? Why didn't I consider what he might have? He doesn't make bets when he doesn't have the goods.
Now I think that even if I had gone through this thought process I'd still have called. At this point I'm pretty much pot committed but if can get away from it I would still have a decent chip stack, where if I lose I'll be crippled with only 570 chips and blinds soon going up to the next level.
Maybe you're wondering what all this had to do with having a decent kicker, aren't you? Well, he had what I hadn't even considered. He had trip 3's too and also a decent kicker, but only a Q. So I won. In part I was lucky he didn't have an Ace. When I hit trips it's always hard for me to remember that someone else may have hit them too and I'd better have a good kicker when I find them challenging me.
A good chunk of it is do RUSH that I still fall into the pattern of win little, lose big. Though mostly due to poor choices on my part there were a few bad beats as well.
