WOW I haven't posted anything on here since December 2012. I wasn't sure I could even find this blog, but fortunately I kept the information in a spreadsheet I have.

A brief updating. Locally the monthly poker tournament I've been going to has ended its run. The fellow who kept it all together decided after 13 years it was time for him to retire it. Will miss the play and the players. They were fun relaxing tournaments. So for live poker it'll be Poker Pub tournaments. I've been attending them irregularly over the past year or so.

Online I have two accounts to work with, 1) Juicy Stakes and 2) Bovada. A poker friend of mine is on Bovada and that encouraged me to finally join it. Juicy Stakes is OK, but has a major drawback of too few players for the Tournaments & SNG's I want to play. They do have a couple of Free Rolls with guaranteed $150 or $250 tournaments with about 600 players that payout pretty deep. They also do an evening $1 + .10 guaranteed $100 tournament that has around 70 players. You start with 2000 chips and the blinds are 15 minutes. I can use Poker Tracker to track my play.

Bovada is a whole different setup. They say, in order to make play more fair, no poker tracking software can be used, and they just give players a number to identify themselves with.

Wrote this a few months ago (2015) but never posted. Will post now.

Tournament 64453738 $2 + .20

This was my 4th tournament of the day. The 1st is in my previous post. The 2nd was a bounty tournament with 168 players. I ended up 153 when my JJ met a JT and the JT hit a straight on the River. Overall I felt I played OK in that one. The 3rd was a deep stack tournament with 205 players; I finished 135. I had mixed play in that one overall.

I thought this 4th one was going to follow the others and I'd miss the money. My play was OK but I couldn't seem to get any traction. I'd win a few chips then I'd lose them shortly after. We played for 125 hands and around the 75th hand I finally started up in my chip count and for the most part stayed that way to the end. When we got into the plus 100 hands I did get lucky a number of times AND didn't get sucked out on when I had good cards. Final hand was 99 vs AQo and my 99 held!!

The tournament had 24 players and paid the top 4. I was 1st and won $19.20. Felt good to make the money and KEEP myself AWAY from those calls that kill me and there were several hands that tempted me that way. I wasn't sure they had me beat, but they made the big bet on the flop before me, so I bit my tongue, folded, and waited for a better spot.

The graphics following are just the final leader board and the PT4 graph of chip count to hands.

PT4 Notes & stuborn strike out

I've mentioned PT4 creating notes for you. Here is an example:

I still add my own notes as with them I include the type of session I'm playing. With PT you don't know if it was a SNG, Tournament, Freeroll, etc..

Now to my tournament play this morning. I entered a $2.20 Turbo tournament (2000 chips/ 5 min blinds) that had no late registration. We had 22 total players. The top 4 make the money. I played decent poker up to my last hand when I let my emotions get the best of me and was knocked out at 11th. This shows one of my big leaks that cost me my chance to play to the money.

Here is a video replay of the hand. Since it's not going to YouTube I can't edit comments in. I'm also not sure if you can play this without a special add-on.

Quick details: I had A9o on the Button. I had 3794 chips and was in  in 6th or 7th place. Blinds were 125/250/25. The play was folded to me, so I decided to see if I could steal the blinds and open-raised 3 BB (probably too low) and was called by the BB. Anyway, so far so good. If it falls through I've only lost 750 chips.

The flop is 10s Qc Jh and here is where the rub starts for me. I didn't hit the flop, but I now have an open-ended straight draw. If I hit the upper end I'll have the nut straight. Villain bets the pot. Rats. I don't feel he has the nut straight and suspect he is on a draw like me and betting big to get me to fold. Well I'M NOT GOING TO THAT!! I call.

A 3d on the Turn and villain bets All-In with 1785. If I call, I'll be All-In and he has me covered. I'm sure the 3d didn't help him and I still like my chances with the open-ended straight draw and I doubt he can beat a straight, though we might chop if that happens.  I'm not really terribly concerned about what he might have. I've already dismissed his having a straight and if he paired on the board, or double paired, MY STRAIGHT, on the River draw would beat him!! I DON'T WANT TO GIVE THAT UP!! So I call. Alas, the River is a 6s and with his pocket KQo he pairs his Q,  near doubles up and I'm gone!

Now, there was no reason for me to let myself be put into the position to be knocked out of the tournament. I had a decent amount of chips at the start of that hand and logic told me, I should let that hand go, and be around for a better change later. I didn't have the patience and was just too stubborn to let go. Not a winning way

Now let's see if I can get the video replay in. The extension on it is ".webm" and in order to view the file on my computer I had to download & install a viewer that could read those kind of video files. The viewer is free but during the install it also wanted to add a lot of junk for ads, to do tracking, and add toolbars to your browser. They say you can cancel all that stuff later if you want, BUT I'd rather not have it there in the 1st place. If all goes well, when you try to play this from the web it will play OK. Let me know if you have any trouble:  tmoskal1@comcast.net.

In the money in a Free Roll

OK this is no big deal overall but it was nice to have finally happen. It was $50 Free Roll on Carbon Poker. There were 4694 players and the top 30 were paid. Not greatly: 1st was $13.50, 9th - $1, and   26-30 $0.35. I came in 24th and won a whooping $0.40 after 3 plus hours of play. If I had been willing gamble some more I might have ranked higher, but as I closed on number 30, I decided to hang in there. It really wasn't that big of a decision as I didn't have any great cards and often other players were betting 2 or 3 BB's or more. Blinds at that point were 10,000/20,00 with ante of 2000. My stack around 51,000. Anyway I made it.

A problem I have when play gets to these levels (blinds of 10,000/20,000), even though I know I need to do something sooner rather than later, I'm never sure when to make the jump/gamble. At the place I'm in above when my turn comes up for the blinds they are going eat away more than half my chip stack so I can't just sit around but I hate to gamble with just junk cards. I'm the Cut Off with 89s, suited connectors, that might be worth the gamble. Play is checked to the Hi-Jack position who open raises All-In for 48,896 chips, which is about 600 less then me. We are both pretty much in the same desperate straits, but since he bet 1st that makes me feel much more iffy about my 98s. Against one other player with random cards it's a coin flip. Pot odds are about 2/1. Players to my left, BT has 81,962; SB 72, 388; and BB with 146,556 and already has 20,000 in the pot.  I don't like it so I pass. The BB calls the All-In.

Since it's two players and one is All-In they turn up their cards. Hi-Jack has AA and BB has QQ. I'm feeling pretty good that I folded. The flop comes: 6s 8s 9c. DUH! If I'd called I'd have two pair. The Turn - Kd, the River - 9h. Double DUH! A FH for me at the end, if I'd stayed and I'd have tripled up which would have put me back in the came, for at least a little while.

So when is the best time for those "any two cards?" Are there other things I should consider? Part of my problem at this point, is that "any two cards" is not going to hit most of the time and when it doesn't it tends to put me on tilt for a bit. Yes, I could have AA & the Villain have the 89 & I'd still lose!!! That would tilt me even more!!!  It does hurt a bit less when I don't have the best cards.

Anyway it was fun and it was nice to finally make the money in a large number of players FR and small number of payout places (30). I'm sure I learned a few things along the way tonight.

Alas against my $0.40 plus I went down earlier in the day $5+ mainly due to poor play, but that's another story.

Lastly here is a graph of how my chip count went over the 210 hands:

The worst of times, the best of times

Fixed Limit Holdem and No Limit Holdem the whole story lies in there.  More later I have to go to bed. Going with a group to Fort McDowell and expect to enter their Noon tournament. Play cash? We'll see.

Wednesday Monthly Poker Tournament

We had a nice crowd tonight, 30 plus or so, and though there was storming around some areas in Tucson, all was cozy, warm, and pleasant inside.

Last month I mentioned I came in 2nd. Well, I believe I did a 2nd again, but this time a penultimate one!! One fellow at my table busted out 1st. I don't know if anyone else busted before I did shortly after our 1st break. One plus point to that is I never got around to buying a 7 & 7; $$$ saved.

There are a number of reasons why I was ousted so soon. Some of it the cards, where I ended up with something decent only to find the other player had a "better" decent hand. Cards again, very few really good hands to play, with most of them being so-so. Others relate to my play. I went for an open ended straight draw a couple of times and a nut high flush draw that didn't hit. In themselves that would be OK, but other players were betting their chips and I had to call them to stay in eating up more of my chips then I liked. Then not playing close enough attention to the board, so when I was beat by a flush, I'd not even noticed that possibility was there. Not winning ways to play.

However, the biggest problem I had tonight was I wasn't really focused on the game and what was happening with the players as well as with the cards.I paid too much attention to what my cards were with little thought of what the other player might have that could be beat me, and only rarely folded when my good cards didn't hit the flop.

Was fun though and I'll be back again in September!

One sort of plus of ending so early, was what I found when I got back home. In the Red Garter area there were signs that some rain had fallen, and as I headed North it looked like it had rained harder. Then as I was heading up La Cholla from River I could see the red lights flashing. At the TMC entrance and Orange Grove just the flashing red lights. I stopped at Albertsons and when I was checking out the cashier mentioned they had loss their electric earlier in the evening for a very short time. That doesn't happen much in my area. Shopping done, off I head to home.

I pull into the 2nd entrance and see all is dark and an electric utility truck is blocking the roadway. Hmmmm. I turn around and enter the 1st entrance and electric is fine there. So I think they must have some kind of problem in that front area. As I drive toward my area I notice, OH, no lights on that side, and so it was up to my place and beyond. WOW a power failure and I have a half gallon of ice cream in my trunk! Grrrrr. Enter my place, grab a flashlight, look at the clock on my range and see it stopped at 6:25PM. Uh Oh ! I put the groceries away and decide to head out to pick up some ice and as I head to my car, I see lights on!! Joy!!! I head back to my apartment and indeed the electric is back; my frig is humming away!!

If I had played well tonight and got back between 10PM & 11PM, I'd not have known it happened until I saw one of my digital clocks blinking, and even then I'd have assumed it was just a quick blip, not a 2 1/2 hour outage.

That's enough for tonight. I installed PT4 yesterday (Tuesday) and will add some comments on it soon.
